I’ve always been wary about expensive, unnecessary health supplements for my family – human or pet, but sometimes even a sceptic has to change his mind. glucosamine for dogs has been an absolute lifesaver for our family pet Zoe.
Meet Zoe, our delightful 11 year old red heeler cross. She’s always been an active dog and loves her walks and chasing balls. This is her story…
Two winters ago Zoe started with a bit of joint stiffness in the cold – then came the pain. OK age catches up with all of us but when you love dogs, it tears your heart out to hear your dog whimpering with pain just trying to climb a few steps. Our vet confirmed osteoarthritis, and we talked about pain meds and anti-inflammtory drugs but weren’t keen on the side effects. Then he suggested trying a glucosamine for dogs supplement. It took a bit of convincing for the sceptic in me to come around but what choice did I have?
We started with a popular glucosamine and chondroitin mix – first problem – Zoe wasn’t keen on these tablets! She could suss them out in her food and didn’t like them pushed down her throat. After a bit of research we quickly switched to liquid glucosamine which Zoe liked much better and that worked a treat – within weeks Zoe was racing around like a crazy puppy and incredibly… no pain.
I’ve always thought of glucosamine as a health supplement for people but I’ve rapidly discovered the benefits of liquid glucosamine for dogs!

Vader is my 8 year old Rottweiler that I rescued from downtown Detroit in 2000. Vader was diagnosed with osteosarcoma cancer on June, 11th 2007. My two options were to do nothing giving him about 3 months to live, or to have his right leg amputated. At that time I didn’t think about cost, only what was best for Vader. How would he get along with only three legs? How long would the surgery prolong his life? Many tough questions went through my head. After doing weighing all the options and doing online research about how dogs adapt to having only three legs, I decided to have the surgery performed. I went to pick him up the day after his surgery, which he came through the great, and I was so surprised to see him standing waging his little stub of a tail. I thought I was going to have to carry him. I custom built him a ramp to get into my Trailblazer (as you can see in the video) and he went right up them. I practiced with him going up the ramp BEFORE his surgery so he would be familiar with it. I took a video of the whole trip from getting in and out of the truck and into the house. He actually RAN into the house and up some huge stone steps, I was amazed. The scene in the video with his T-shirt on is actually day one post surgery.
The story continues, Vader is still doing well, but for space concerns I will stop here for now. If I get enough views/responses, I’ll continue the story with more details like the costs, healing, care, the chemo treatment and diet.
I really believe that the diet I put Vader on after his surgery and during his Chemotherapy was and still is instrumental to his remarkable recover and his continued health.
I hope this video gives hope and helps people make the difficult decisions when confronted with this horrible and much too common disease.

THE DIET
During Chemo it is important to give them bone meal as a supplement to help their bones and teeth because the Chemo reduces calcium in their bodies. I still give Vader bone meal in his food just to be safe. For breakfast we supplement his dog food with sardines either in water or tomato sauce. The stores around me must be going nuts wondering why they are selling so many since I buy them up by the case whenever they come in 
The dog food I use is IAM’s senior; it has a lot of protein and a little less fat. You can use other brands but just make sure the first ingredient is chicken, beef, fish… and not some cornmeal or byproduct. For dinner we give him eggbeaters mixed in with his dog food. And whenever we make broccoli or vegetables I will give him some. Vegetables are supposed to be very good for them. I wish I would have known some of this when he was a puppy so I could of fed him better. I always used whatever the vet recommend and something with glucosamine and chondroitin but didn’t supplement it with anything. Luckily he has always been fit and healthy until this bout with cancer.

In San Diego recently there has been a trial of some brilliant new innovative surgery that helps with arthritis for dogs.
Keyway an 8 year old German Shepherd dog has just had elbow joint replacement surgery for joint arthritis and is now recovering well. His front elbow joints were replaced with special prosthetic joints to help him walk without pain.
It would be nice if we could avoid surgery for dog arthritis but it’s also good to know that we can help when supplements like glucosamine for dogs is not enough.

I have a dog that is suffering from Arthritis. He is taking Rimadyl for it. But the medicine is not helping him. What else can I do for him?
Glucosamine & Chondroitin has worked great for my dogs arthritis. We were told she needed to be on Rimadyl but it wasn’t doing anything. I give her 2 pills a day of Vitamin World Joint Soother and she has done a complete turn around after only a couple of weeks. It’s been a year that she’s been on these and I’m so glad that it’s helped as much as it has. I’ve heard that the liquids work very well since they get in the system much quicker.

I was wondering if anyone had heard of or if they have used a product called Dr. Franks pet pain spray.It sounds to good to be true and yes I do know what that usually means but I am hoping to find that out before I get my hopes up with a purchase.Thank you if you can give me some sort of fed back .
Our vet starts with glucosamine and baby aspirins. Next is Rimadyl. Then DMSO applied to the skin, then steroids, finally more powerful pain killers like Metacam.

Q:i have a 14 yr old border collie retvr mix he all of a sudden began limping and dragging his back leg he has alot of truble getting up and doesnt walk to far anymore at all lately it seems to get worse he has been on suppliments for 3 months of glucosamine and chondroitin as well as adult food with those ingredients in them he also gets an asprin baby coated once a day should i spend the money to get him x ray d ? i am confident in the dr s diagnosis of arthritis and old age but i just dont want to think it could be a sprain or fracture rather than the above what d

I just recently bought my dog Glucosamine, Chondroitin msm pills and i was wondering what the dosage would be? I have a 96 lb Lab. The pills say there is 1500 mg of Gluscosamine, 1200 mg of Chondroitin and 500 mg of msm with three pills. Any ideas on how many pills to give my dog a day?
So 3 pills a day gives the dosages you wrote? If so, that does will be fine for a dog of that size. 1500mg of Glucosamine is the dose that has been shown to have a therapeutic effect. (ie relieves pain) and is a nutritional supplement also.
EDIT: Make sure you give the pills with food, as studies have shown that glucosamine and chondroitin are absorbed better when they have a ‘vehicle’ (ie food) to get into the blood stream with.

I have a 9 year old germen shep with arthritis. Is it ok to give hime glucosamine made for people, and if so what is the dose? He is about 70 pounds. The vet says he is prone to arthritis and to massage his legs once and a while.
How fast will glucosamine work for my dog? and should i give it to him everyday. He used to be so active but he sees so sad lately, it breaks my heart. The vet gave him medication before but told me to stop giving it to him because it made him vomit.
I’d call and ask my vet but shes on vacation.

My dog has been taking it for about thirty days (along with Previcox) and I have noticed a distinct decrease in the swelling around his joint. He also seems to be in signficantly less pain. He will run out of Previcox in about a week and I’m hoping to just continue with the Glycoflex. I don’t want to damage his liver with the Previcox. Any input would be appreciated.
We are using Rimady with our Bulldog and will not take her off of it unless bloodtests tell us otherwise. Our girl has severe HD, knee problems, and arthritis. We supplement her with Snovi-MSM, but she is also on a prescription kibble from the vet. (Royal Canin Large Breed Mobility) Our girl was really, really bad until we got her on this trio. She is doing so well, that we didn’t want to mess with this combo. Very expensive, but the results are fantastic.
